Doomscrolling (spending excessive time looking at negative news)

Doomscrolling refers to the habit of continuously browsing through bad news on the internet, particularly on social media platforms or news websites, to the point where it becomes detrimental to one’s mental health. This pattern is marked by a relentless quest for updates, often with the anticipation that the news will be distressing, which can perpetuate a loop of negative feelings.

This term became widely recognized during events that had significant global impact, such as the COVID-19 pandemic and various political and social upheavals. Doomscrolling is especially common among younger demographics and can be seen as a type of compulsive behavior linked to internet use.

The practice of doomscrolling can negatively affect both mental and physical health, as indicated by research from the National Academy of Sciences. Being mindful of this tendency and actively managing how much and what type of media we consume is crucial for maintaining mental health and overall well-being.

To counteract the effects of doomscrolling, it’s advisable to limit exposure to distressing news, engage in uplifting activities, and seek professional help if the habit becomes overwhelming.
